What AI can teach us about feedback
/If your role includes giving people feedback, then you would have spent some time wondering how to make the feedback more palatable — How to minimise the negative reaction you might get. If you are anything like me, that also means there’s been times where you have diluted feedback so much it has become useless.
I love the way AI takes feedback. It doesn’t matter how you give it, the machine doesn't take it personally and acts on it immediately.
I’ve worked with some teams where they do feedback just like AI. No emotional reactions, just curiosity and action. Building that environment is pretty simple, but it takes willingness and consistency.
Give feedback for good work well done, as well as when something needs improving.
Make feedback clear and actionable.
Focus on ideas and actions not people. Feedback should benefit the person hearing it. Personal attacks are not feedback.
Be genuinely curious about how the people around you see the situation.
Be open to disagreement. There’s more than one way to see and do most things.
Build feedback into the routine. Regularly asking ‘What went well? How could we make it even better?’ creates an expectation that feedback will be given and received.
Say thank you when people give you feedback
